Oil-based or "oil-modified" urethane floor finish is a traditional mineral spirits-based polyurethane finish. There are many finishes of this type approved by the MFMA for application on gymnasium floors. Oil-modified finishes are generally amber in color, high gloss with good gloss retention, and they take approximately 12 to 24 hours to dry between coats. They are relatively inexpensive and durable. They typically amber (yellow) with age.

Oil based is the dinosaur and has a proven track record. However, the finish ambers with time, requires a lot more drying time and emits a strong vapor, that is not only unhealthy but contributes to the depletion of the earths ozone. Rumor has it that soon, all solvent based finishes will be non-compliant with the states V.O.C. Laws making them illegal to use. Water based or commonly called latex has evolved into an excellent alternative.

Alkyd, or oil-based paint penetrates wood better than latex (water-based) paint and won't stick when you keep your doors and windows shut for the winter. For the bulk of most jobs, latex (water-based) paint is the better choice. It dries faster, doesn't yellow and can be cleaned up with soap and water when you break for the day.

Dry ice and liquid nitrogen smoke machines both create a heavy low lying fog effect. The materials they use to create this are often difficult and expensive to get hold of for most people, hard to store, and the effect can now be easily created on demand by new electronic water based versions. Disney theme parks tend to use nitrogen foggers as the cost of liquid nitrogen is less in bulk than special effect fog fluids.

Yes I have done this with both long and short estered tests They work great. It just takes a little longer through the coffee filtering process. I will have the links later for the method I used with all the numbers.

Limewashes represent the best of both form and function. They're beautiful and breathable, making them the perfect choice for both historic and new buildings. Unlike typical modern paints, they don't trap water and they age beautifully--instead of getting shabby, they develop a lovely mellow patina over time.

Not from me, you can't. I just don't believe in oil finishes, not on a bass anyway. I know lots of people do them and swear up and down about it, but you won't get me to do one. I've spent a lot of time and resources coming up with what I feel is the best finish I can offer. I use a polyester product for the fill coats and a satin catalyzed conversion varnish for the top coats. There is an extra charge if you want a specific color, burst or dye job.
