A very important distinction! A ground plane is REQUIRED for a mag mount antenna to work properly. For optimim performance, a ground plane for 800 MHz is a minimum 28" x 28" plane of metal that becomes an integral part of the mag mount antenna. A ground plane is NOT a ground wire. Or put another way, a ground wire will NOT satisfy the need for a ground plane. Ground plane information also here.

All of the PSI piezoceramic parts come with a thin (~3000 Angstrom units) metallic electrode already on the ceramic. Wire leads can be soldered (use ordinary 60/40 resin core solder) anywhere on the electrode to suit the application/experiment. The antenna needs to be properly mounted for optimum performance. If the mounting instructions are not followed the range will be reduced. Ideally, an omni antenna should be placed on the tip of a mast above a tower. This will give a nice circular radiation pattern. If your tower is 300 feet high and you wish to place the omni at the 100 foot level, you will have to attach the omni to a stand-off bracket at some distance away from the tower leg.
