The recommended way to do this is using ffdshow's "Grab" function. This works even with Overlay mixer used because the decoded frame is grabbed directly from the decoder output, and can also grab an entire range of frames in one go. However this will not correctly grab a frame from an anamorphic video, the frame will be in the video's native unstretched resolution, and it will also not capture any softsubs.
