Many players will ask for their pings in games. The "ping" is the time it takes your computer to communicate with the host computer or server. It is measured in milliseconds and anything under 400 is considered to play smoothly.

You can always ping your own computer by using the address "127.0.0.1". As a shortcut you can use "localhost" as a host name. You might also consider adding the line "127.0.0.1 localhost" to your Hosts file.

You should ping your first hop apprx fifty times. (To get your first hop do a tracert to anywhere and note the first address like 10.xx.xx.xx The pings to your first hop should normally be under 30ms with an occasional ping in the 60-70ms range. Disregard the first ping. If you see high pings or a high spike and are running Win9x/ME hold down Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" on all programs except for Explorer and Systray. Then try the ping to your first hop again.

Ping is a basic Internet program that lets you verify that a particular Internet address exists and can accept requests. PING stands for "Packet InterNet Groper," and what is measures is the amount of time it takes for data to get from your machine to another machine elsewhere on the Internet and back again. The easiest way to find your ping, is this: In the newly-opened MS-DOS? window, type "ping <host's IP address here>" (without the quotes and fill in the IP address) ideal ping is anywhere in the range of about 100 to 200ms. Anything below 100 is almost unheard of, but very nice.

Check that you CANNOT ping the SLIMP3 device when you have disconnected it from the network to make sure that some other device isn't using that IP address. The SlimServer software connects to the server update.slimdevices.com every time it starts up and every 24 hours after that to check for updates. You can disable this feature in the Additional Server Settings area of the SlimServer.

Ping / Latency numbers shown or listed inside game environment does not truly reflect the actual latency and ping performance of a broadband connection to a particular game server. Overall real-time participation of other gamers within the same instance of the gaming server will also influence each otr’s network performance.

In order to ping, you need to be able to send a simple XML-RPC message. Most blogging tools support XML-RPC-based pings. There are lots of toolkits you can use. It uses the same interface as weblogs.com pings.

Note: in layman's terms, HTTP Monitor = Website Monitor. HTTP is simply the protocol that the web uses: Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.

First, remember that a "ping" is an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packet. It's a pretty simple as protocols go. ICMP is defined in RFC 792 and provides a way for IP stacks to send simple messages containing information or errors. Given this, it often gets the lowest priority of any protocol on the routing totem-pole, and may actually be rejected by routers if there is a lot of traffic on the network at a given time.

In the default configuration we rely on the Linux bridge-utils in domain 0 to set up virtual networking. After you've created a new domain (e.g., domain 1) you should be able to run ifconfig in domain 0 and see an interface with a name like vif1.0; you should also be able to check that bridging is working by typing brctl show xen-br0. Finally, you can check the IP confiuration in the new domain by logging into it via the console (xm console) and running standard tools such as ifconfig and route.

Your client machines will not be able to ping the outside world and receive a reply unless you're running a gateway on your internal network. You will, however, notice that if you map DNS in SpoonProxy and set your SpoonProxy machine's IP as your client's DNS server that a ping to an external server name from a client machine will resolve an IP address, but it will still receive no ping reply. (The same will hold true for tracert.)
