VeNUS Closure is a surgical technique similar to EVLT. However, it takes longer to perform, has to be done under general anaesthetic and is more expensive. We do not think it is as good as EVLT.

A transit of Venus is the observed passage of the planet across the disk of the sun. The planet Venus, orbiting the sun "on the inside track," catches up to and passes the slower earth. Venus, appearing as a small dot in the foreground, will move from left to right across the sun. The word "transit" means passage or movement-in this case, across the face of the sun.

Venus' rotation is retrograde, or backwards compared to the other planets. This makes the "official" north pole point downwards. When looking at a body, the Simulator automatically points the north pole of that body upwards, so for Venus everything will look upside-down.

Transits of Venus have a strange pattern of frequency. A transit will not have happened for about 121 ? years (prior to 2004, the last one was 1882). Then there will be one transit (such as the one in 2004) followed by another transit of Venus eight years later (in the year 2012). Then there will be a span of about 105 ? years before the next pair of transits occur, again separated by eight years. Then the pattern repeats (121 ? , 8, 105 ? , 8).

VNUS closure got to market about two years before the first vein laser. Some insurance companies approve both technologies, some only VNUS (as of now). The VNUS device is more complicated and considerably more expensive to use. Both technologies are FDA approved. I have found that the laser is almost 100% successful in closing average-sized saphenous veins, and it is definitely more effective than the VNUS device for closing large saphenous veins.

FCPS has plans to keep the business of schools up and running. We call them "continuity of operations plans," and they address employee lines of successions, essential personnel, and resource allocation.
