What is interpolated resolution?

Scanners | Frequently Asked Questions
Interpolated resolution is determined by the scanner adding pixels in between existing pixels using a mathematical formula to accurately improve resolution based on the existing pixels. This isn't always the best indicator of image quality, better to rely on the stated optical resolution.

In image resolution, what's the difference between, say, 400 dpi true and 400 dpi interpolated?

Frequent Asked Questions
True resolution is the number of dots per inch of reflected light captured by the scanner head. The scanner head is physically limited in the number of dots which it can capture. Interpolation software (usually built in to the scanner, but also available in raster manipulation programs) can make a good guess at what lies between the dots recorded by the scanner. Is the resolution real or interpolated?

Allyn Fratkin's Olympus D-320L Digital Camera FAQ
Real. The CCD size is listed as 810,000 pixels. This is larger than the 786,432 pixels needed for 1024x768 resolution. This means the brightness of each pixel is not interpolated. However, digital cameras under about $5000 interpolate the color. That is, each individual pixel of the CCD can only record one of red, green, or blue. To generate an R, G, and B value for each pixel, the missing value is interpolated ("guessed") from nearby pixels. See similar questions...

What is "interpolated" resolution on a scanner?

FAQ for comp.graphics.apps.paint-shop-pro
Many scanners claim things like 4800dpi "interpolated" resolution. If you didn't pay thousands of dollars, this resolution isn't really there, and isn't really that useful. Unless you're trying to get really fine details out of a small piece of a photo that's in really sharp focus, more than 300 dpi is usually a waste of time and memory. See similar questions...

What does “interpolated resolution” mean?

Canon EOS Beginners' FAQ V - Misc
It’s a fancy way of saying “faking it.” Let’s say a scanner is capable of scanning 300 pixels per linear inch. Wouldn’t it be great if you could say it’s capable of producing 1200 interpolated pixels per inch? Well, that’s what scanner makers do! They take the 300 ppi data, quadruple it and then mathematically smooth it all out. See similar questions...

Why is image resolution so important?

Next Generation Printing, Copying & Digital Communication:.

If your file is not 300 dpi, you can not simply increase the dpi to a higher one in your imaging program, you will need to rescan the original image at a higher resolution. See similar questions...
