If you are over 70 years of age, you are not obligated to serve jury duty. You must show proof of your age in order to be permanently excused. Of course, if you are over 70 and wish to serve, you may.

Upon request, the Clerk's Office can furnish you with a certificate stating the date you reported and that you were paid an attendance fee. We do not list the mileage or parking fee that you were paid since it is a direct reimbursement of your expenses and is not recoverable by your employer. back

If you become ill after checking in, do not leave before being excused by the Jury Management staff. If you become ill before you report for jury service, you must call the Jury Management Office at 973-693-5913 between 8:00a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

We applaud you for performing your civic duty, but let's face it, sometimes it is just not convenient to drive across country just to serve on jury duty. We have spent years developing and perfecting a number of perfectly legal and moral methods for avoiding jury duty. When you get called for jury duty, we will attempt to contact you to see if you wish to avoid the jury duty.

Each county and Baltimore City is responsible for providing payment for serving jury duty. The reimbursement varies from $15 to $30 per day, depending on the jurisdiction. Contact the Jury Commissioner’s Office in your county for more information.

Eligibility for federal jury service is dependent both upon an individual meeting the legal qualifications for service and upon the random chance of having one's name drawn from the source lists. Each judicial district must have a formal written plan for the selection of jurors, which provides for random selection from a fair cross-section of the community in the district, and which prohibits discrimination in the selection process.

You may ask for a postponement to any date within ten months of your original jury service date. The date must be a weekday that is not a legal holiday. We recommend that you choose a date early enough in the ten month postponement period so that if you have an emergency, you can make other arrangements to serve before the ten months are over. Employers may ask to be excused from paying an employee for jury service by submitting a written application to the judge in the case. Employers who fire or threaten to fire employees because of jury service may be fined up to $500 or imprisoned up to thirty days or both if convicted of this charge.

You are selected from a list of registered voters, licensed drivers and persons with an MVA identification card. The first time you are selected you are sent a questionnaire to determine if you qualify for jury duty. You cannot serve on a jury in Baltimore City if you are not a resident of Baltimore City, have been convicted of a felony, or have a matter currently pending in the Baltimore City Circuit Court. Jurors who are qualified are selected on a random basis.

Jurors are protected by federal statute, Title 28 U.S.C. 1875, which states "No employer shall discharge, intimidate, or coerce any permanent employee by reason of such employee's jury service or the attendance or scheduled attendance in connection with such service, in any court of the United States."

In order to be excused for medical reasons you must complete question number six (6) of the questionnaire and return it to the Jury Office with a doctor's note. Your request for excusal will not be considered without a doctor's note. A written response to your request for excusal will be mailed 7-10 days after receipt of the request.

There can be some wait time. We suggest that you bring reading material or small projects to pass the time while waiting for assignment to a courtroom. The most common complaint of jurors is the unexplained time apparently wasted during jury selection and trials. What might appear to be a waste of time to you is actually time being used by the judge and attorneys working on matters that must be done outside the presence of the jury.

A.) OtterBase complies with all applicable laws that afford job protection rights to employees summoned to serve on juries or subpoenaed to serve as witnesses. While most hostels do not impose an age restriction, this is not always the case, particularly in establishments which have a bar on the premises. Again, it is recommended that you check the hostel's microsite to find out whether or not there is an age restriction.

Jurors are drawn from lists of state taxpayers and licensed drivers as well as from voter registration rolls. Do not give up your right to vote in the hope that you will avoid jury duty. Chances are, if you pay taxes or drive a car, you may still be called.
