Since diesel tractor engines work off high pressure, if air gets into the fuel line (like when you run out of fuel) the tractor may no longer want to start up. (If you do not see smoke when you crank the engine, you probably have air in the line which is preventing the fuel from getting to the engine.

If your tractor will not start and you do not see smoke (and sometimes even when you do) when you are cranking it, then you may have air in the fuel lines (see below question and answer on how to fix).
