R-value is an assigned number derived from a specific testing procedure to determine a materials (or building assemblage) "resistance to conductive heat transfer". The higher the R-value, the more resistant a material (or building assemblage) is to conductive heat transfer.

The R-value, or resistance to heat flow, is the most common used measurement for determining building material's insulating properties. R-value and U-value are reciprocal to one another. The term U-value is measured by the amount of heat that escapes a surface-a wall, ceiling, or window. R-Value is measured by insulation value. How many glass layers there are in a window to the type of gas that is between the panes of glass, are some of the basis of this measurement. That's a good question, but unfortunately the answer is not so simple, Window thermal performance is measured as a U-Value which Is the reciprocal of the R-Value ( R-Value = 1/U-Value. For example. R 2 = U .50, or 1/.50 = 2) A bit of background: the R-Value measures the resistance to heat loss or gain, while the U-Value measures the transmittance of heat through a material. This is a measurement of heat transmission. The U value of a window is measured by the number of BTU's that will pass through each square foot of area per degree of temperature difference from one side of the window to the other (the lower the number, the better).
