Whenever possible, Touch the Earth Farm purchases certified organic seed stock, bulbs and seedlings, which excludes GMO's. When we cannot buy organic, we purchase exclusively from non-GMO seed and plant sources in order to ensure the best quality hybrids for ourselves and our customers. Currently the law for organic standards and GMO's in the US is under revision. It is expected that the final ruling will prohibit the use of GMO's in foods carrying an organic label. It has become very popular in aromatherapy to use only organic oils. In our experience, organic may not necessarily mean better. When oils are steam distilled, offensive or harmful pesticides are left behind. The pesticide reside is too big to pass through the distillation process. Good question! It's not that the non-organically-grown is not vegan, but there are ethical issues around the production of chocolate and cocoa. Organic is not necessarily fair-trade (see the article), but, if you can't find fair-trade chocolate and cocoa, organic at least does not endanger the workers with pesticides.
