Q9. How much fuel does it burn an hour?

Kosmos Travel Log & 4. FAQ
A9. Our old boat " Seas the Day " was a single engine 8,000 pound boat that went about 25 knots. It burned about 15 gallons an hour at this cruising speed. Bigger dual engine boats range 20-40 gallons an hour. The Nordhavn 43 is about 55,000 pounds. Yet because of its design and slower speed, it consumes only about 2.5 gallons per hour. Slowing down burns as little as 1.8, speeding up can burn 3+. Said another way, we get about 2.5 to 3.

FAQ
oil - also referred to as Bunker C. To atomize (see next question) properly, the fuel must be kept hot, so steam pipes are routed through the fuel tank in the tender to keep it at 130 degrees F. 1522 did not always burn oil - she was originally built as a coal burner but only stayed that way for a year before being converted. Wood, while burned on real old steam locomotives, does not put out the heat needed to operate larger locomotives like the 1522. See similar questions...

Can we burn both wet and dry fuel?

Boiler & Steam Systems, LLC.
Yes! The big difference is that wet fuel may take 80% more air than dry fuel. Operationally, you may wish to meter the wet and dry fuel to create a consistent fuel blend or you may want to exhaust the least merchantable fuel before using a more valuable fuel. With the controls designed for this scenario, this can easily be accomplished. In general, any time there are continuous variations in fuel quality, it is desirable to have an operator near by the steam plant. See similar questions...

For how long does the wick burn?

Salza Fire Gear
This depends very much on which prop it is, which fuel you use, and how you use the prop. Our regular sized poi wicks has a burn time of at least 4-5 minutes with good flames, the larger props considerably longer. A big factor is the shape of the wick: A larger surface area and thus more exposed wick gives bigger and more dense flames, for example the knotted rope wicks we make. A larger volume can hold more fuel, so the more unexposed wick there is, the longer it'll burn. See similar questions...
