Sclerotherapy can be used to treat both varicose and spider veins. A tiny needle is used to inject the veins with a medication that irritates the lining of the vein. In response, the veins collapse and are reabsorbed. The surface veins are no longer visible. Sclerotherapy relieves symptoms due to varicose and spider veins in most patients. With this procedure, veins can be dealt with at an early stage, helping to prevent further complications.

After several treatments, most patients can expect an 80 percent or better improvement. However, fading is gradual. Total disappearance of spider veins is usually achieved.

Foam Sclerotherapy is the procedure by which a micro-foam of STS is injected into the veins. This requires the use of ultrasound to guide the injections when treating large veins.

It can be used to treat big varicose veins but Mr Chaloner and Mr Sweeney think that it is not as effective as EVLT when used in this way. Foam Sclerotherapy is useful for treating any smaller varicose veins that might be left over after EVLT
