What is a subwoofer?

HSU FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
A subwoofer is a specialized speaker responsible for the most difficult duty in home theater. It produces the very deep, room shaking notes that add a magical effect and balance the sound. This requires providing lots of power to fill a room with sound, and large mechanical motions of the subwoofer. When you hear about Dolby 5.1, the ".1" refers to the subwoofer's special role in a surround sound system consisting of five speakers and (at least) one subwoofer.

Why do I hear a constant tone in my transmission?

Ramsey Electronics
FUZZ or a constant tone is usually caused by the input audio interfering with the 19 kHz sub-carrier of the stereo generator in the transmitter. Radio stations eliminate this by sending the input audio through a low pass filter. The filter must suppress the 19 kHz audio by a minimum of 45 dB. To attain this suppression and maintain good frequency response this filter must contain many poles. See similar questions...

There's a hum in my system. Why?

ADCOM FAQs
There are lots of reasons why a system can ''hum''. Some real common ones are the ''noise'' caused by Halogen lights or light dimmer switches. Another common problem is a ''ground loop'' caused by a cable TV connection. To check if this is the problem, unhook the cable feed from your system. If the hum goes away, you've found your problem. The problem can be solved by use of a ''ground loop isolator'' which can be purchased at any electronic supply store. See similar questions...

Why do my m-cube speakers have to be connected to the active subwoofer rather than the amplifier?

Mission - FAQ
The M-cube active subwoofer acts in 3 different ways. Firstly, it acts as an amplifying device for all those low frequency effects (LFE) that you feel rather than hear and does this via an RCA phono lead. Secondly, by means of the umbilical cable, it amplifies all the channel specific information that the m-cube satellite speakers cannot reproduce simply because of their small size. Next, you cannot use the speakerphone function on your telephone during your recording. Innkeeper PBX accesses audio through the handset cord. With the speakerphone turned on, there is no audio going through the handset. You must use a microphone. You can leave the innkeeper PBX in place and your telephone will continue to operate normally. How do we hear?

Hearing is a series of events in which the ear converts sound waves into electrical signals and causes nerve impulses to be sent to the brain where they are interpreted as sound. The ear has three main parts: the outer, middle, and inner ear. Sound waves enter through the outer ear and reach the middle ear, where they cause the ear drum to vibrate. The vibrations are transmitted through three tiny bones in the middle ear called the ossicles. See similar questions...

How close can I put the subwoofer to my television?

HSU FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Currently, most HSU Research subwoofers are shielded, although extreme proximity of a subwoofer to a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) television may produce streaks of colors. More and more TVs are not sensitive to magnetic fields, so this gets to be less and less of an issue. If you have a plasma, LCD, or DLP based TV, you do not have to worry about magnetic shielding. alt.tv.tiny-toon Frequently Asked Questions
HISMV stands for How I Spent My Vacation, the 80-minute TTA movie, and the jewel in the Tiny Toons crown. Originally intended for a theatrical release, it instead went straight to home video (available either on VHS or laserdisc). Whipper snapper, it's in your best interests to check this out. Prices for the VHS tape range from $10 to $19. See similar questions...
