What is causing the yellow areas in my bahia lawn grass?

Ask a Master Gardener
There could be several reasons, such as an iron deficiency, too high a pH or a lack of iron in the soil. I would suggest a soil test to determine the pH. We offer this service here at the Volusia County Extension Service, 3100 East New York Avenue (Route 44), Deland. The cost is $1 for three samples. We test each Thursday morning, so bring it to the center before then. If the pH is okay, try applying iron chelate in the area. Sedge is an indicator of over-irrigation.

Q: Why won't grass stay in shady areas of my lawn, even though I use shady grasses?

Agro Lawn FAQ page
Grasses are plants that require a certain amount of light to survive. Plants use light to process and create food. Some grasses do better than others in shady areas because of the way they grow. Deep shade grasses grow flatter and can take in more light than a plant that grows straight up and down. Even shady grasses require sunlight for at least 1/3 of the day. If this requirement is not met the plant will begin to suffer and die back.

In the fall and winter, your Bermuda or Zoysia areas may turn yellow to yellow-brown after this application. This is normal for this time of year. Sometimes residents place rocks along the roadway in front of their homes to keep vehicles off their lawns. This is done primarily on residential streets that don't have curbs. These rocks can be real safety hazards. If a vehicle leaves the roadway, rocks won't stop these out-of-control vehicles, just damage them and possibly injure the occupants. Evergreens along roadways appear to be especially affected, probably due to salt injury. What do I do with my grass before it begins to get old and yellow?

WheatgrassKits.com Frequently Asked Questions
Sometimes a person grows a flat of wheatgrass and doesn't use it fast enough. It will start to get yellow. Before that happens, it is better to cut the grass and put it into a plastic bag (with some holes) and then it will keep in the refrigerator for one week. However if one knows he will use it fairly fast, it is better to cut only what one needs for that day to make juice.
