Close all other applications that are running, including instant messaging clients, email, browsers, etc. The game is able to utilize 3-D hardware acceleration, where available, to speed up game play. Click on the Options button and see if you can select 3-D hardware acceleration. If you cannot, you may want to try switching your screen resolution to 800 by 600 pixels with 16 bit color. You can then try selecting 3-D hardware acceleration again.

Chromium absolutely requires hardware acceleration - it will not run at acceptable speeds with software OpenGL. If the OpenGL 'Vendor' string printed out during start-up is 'Brian Paul', you're definitely running in software. See question 7. By default, SDL wants a GLX enabled X server. Chromium runs fine with the XFree4/DRI Voodoo drivers, but the old fullscreen Glide/Mesa hack for the XFree3.3.x is not recognized as valid.

A couple of things: If you are running under DOS, you really do need 32megs of RAM or you need to run under Win95. You can install a larger amount of the game to your hard drive. If you are using Win95, try the DOS version instead. Make sure that you have DirectX 3.0a (or higher) installed. Try installing DirectX 5.0 and the most recent compatible drivers for your video card. Grab the patch from the Files page.

Increase cycles. Use core=dynamic. Try different output modes (e.g. output=overlay). Increase Frameskip. Disable unneeded components in the dosbox.conf such as Sound, mouse or joystick emulation. If all else fails, find a faster computer to run DOSBox on. Also be sure to check the compatibility section of this FAQ as some game/applications are more trouble (or resource hogs) than others.

Probably an old anti virus program or another background software is running, which causes such problems. Check your system.

Photoscape 3D aims to create 20 frames per second to give a reasonably smooth result. The occasional jump may occur due to the demands made on and by the application but they should not impinge on the enjoyment of the result. If the jerkiness is continuous, even at slow speed when moving forward, then the following may explain why: Are you sure you have a 3D graphics card? If not then there isn't much that can be done to improve matters other than to replace the graphics card.

By default, the initial map view covers a large area of North America. To customize your program and speed operation, refer to page 10-18. Some slowness is ok. It should normally take 30 seconds to 1 minute for CheckUp to start on newer computers and up to 5 minutes on older computers. First, it is important to understand the percentage of time that the application is running bytecodes. If the program is I/O bound or running in native methods, then the VM is not involved in the consumption of CPU time. The VM technology will only speed up the time spent running in bytecode.

So many things can cause problems that its really hard for me to say. Edit the forever buttons in your model and turn off the "Force view update after each run" checkbox. This allows the view to skip frames, which may speed up models which are graphics-intensive. If the 3D view is running slowly on your computer, and it is not because the model is particularly detailed, then you could try one or more of the following: Reduce the colours from "true" to "high" in your operating system's Display settings On computers with older graphics cards (in particular those with less than 16MB RAM), the performance is likely to be poor if you run the RadVis window at full-screen size if you are using a screen resolution greater than 1024x768.

Check that the value of the "Number of threads" UCI parameter (or the "Threads" parameter in Glaurung 2) matches the number of CPU cores on your computer. Glaurung is not able to programmatically detect the number of CPUs, and may sometimes use two search threads by default on single-CPU computers. This will cause the program to run extremely slowly. If you compile Glaurung yourself, you must also make sure that NDEBUG is defined.
