Can I use other descriptor types as function parameters?

Descriptors FAQ
Yes you can, but don't. For example you could specify your function requiring a parameter passed a TBuf<10>&. But what if the caller has got a TPtrC, or an HBufC, or even a TBuf<11>? This means that they won't be able to call your function without some extra hassle to fit in with exactly what you have specified. TDes and TDesC are the most general types you can use for your function parameters. Oh how much pain has this one caused? Missing out that little & symbol makes all the difference.

Then why are array and pointer declarations interchangeable as function formal parameters?

Infrequently Asked Questions in comp.lang.c
Classism. We consider arrays ''second class objects''. They don't vote, and they get treated as pointers. Additionally, they're merely objects, not citizens. Marx wrote about this a lot. [a]

My function parameters are corrupt, what happened?

Perl-Win32-ASP FAQ
No. This is a bug in PerlScript that is being worked on. For now there is a work around: use a session object to pass the parameter.

How to use parameters?

PTReportGen FAQs - Report Generator for Microsoft PowerPoint
To use a parameter, you must declare it first. A parameter has a name, a title and a default value. To define a parameter, click Configuration on the Report menu, and click the Parameter tab PTReportGen will replace the parameter name with the actual value before it submits the SQL statements to data sources. You can use the parameter name "$CustomerName" in SQL statements. The parameter name in SQL statements should be delimited by quotation mark.

What is a descriptor?

OpenVMS FAQ -&- page 15
A descriptor is a data structure that describes a string or an array. Each descriptor contains information that describes the type of the data being referenced, the size of the data, and the address of the data. It also includes a description of the storage used for the data, typically static or dynamic. Descriptors are passed by reference.

Can I use 'dbup' and 'dbdown' within a function?

MATLAB Frequently Asked Questions
MATLAB wasn't designed to be used this way. But, if you don't reference any variables between your calls to 'dbup' and 'dbdown' (i.e., you just use 'save', 'who', 'dir', etc), it should work. Otherwise, you may well run into problems. If you 'dbup' while in a function, you change the workspace context while continuing execution of the original function. This means that subsequent references to variables will be bound to variables in a different workspace.

How do I know which kind of descriptor to use?

This flowchart may help. It's taken from my book, Symbian OS Explained (page 76), with some modification:

I want to create a new descriptor in my function. How do I return it to the caller?

Descriptors FAQ
The calling function needs to know that it must take ownership of the returned heap-based descriptor and be responsible for deleting it when it has finished with it. Failure to do this is a common cause of memory leaks. A similar function, which leaves the created descriptor on the cleanup stack for the caller, would be coded as follows:

How do I use the search function?

OnlinePhim.net | Frequently Asked Questions.
Before you search, make sure you select either the English or Vietnamese selection. This will determine the type of result that will be returned. For example, if you want to search for a video with a Vietnamese title, check the "Viet" box and them type in a search term, complete with all symbols and click search. To search for an English title, select "Eng" and type in an english word and click the search button.

What are e-mail parameters and how do I use them?

FAQ / MailMachinePRO
The term "e-mail parameters" refers to the information that is collected from the user when he/she signs up for your mailing list. You can use this user-specific data when sending newsletters by entering in the following variables in your message: Your e-mail address ~~EMAIL~~ has been added to the MailMachinePRO mailing list. Thank you very much for joining my mailing list. Your e-mail address johndoe@doe.com has been added to the MailMachinePRO mailing list.

What are the system types to which all other parameters are compatible?

Modula-2 FAQ
A.Just LOC and ARRAY OF LOC (one dimension). This does not work for multidimensional arrays of LOC, and there are no defined BYTE and WORD types, though implementations may include them as well. A.These are system dependent, and no modules for this can be found in the standard. A vendor MAY supply them. Ask.

Can I order different lens types that have the same parameters?

FAQ | MyContactLens.ca
No. It is regulated by law within the United States and Canada that prescriptions are brand specific. You can only wear the type of lenses listed on your prescription.

How to use fgets( ) to read on a file/socket descriptor?

How do I get around Postgres 7.2's limit of 16 parameters for a function?

d. OpenACS Programming FAQ
Bummer, huh? Fortunately, this limit has been removed in Postgres 7.3. Look throughout the code to see how the function is called. Are some of the parameters always the same? Then go ahead and take those parameters out and set them explicitly in the function's body. If that's still not enough, then you'll have to overload the function with different sets of parameters. See packages/acs-content-repository/sql/postgresql/content-item.sql to see how Dan ported content_item__new.

Q16. How often should a clinic measure Cardiac Function Parameters?

CO FAQ
Patient profiling should be performed to establish the adequacy of the medication dosages and the hemodialysis prescription (see CHP, Chapter 3). Such a profiling measurement should be repeated until an adequate hemodialysis and medication prescription has been confirmed. A cardiovascular baseline may then be established for a patient by measuring CO for several more months, for instance, every time the patient's access flow is measured.

The address for some local variables and function parameters seem to be wrong. Why?

CC8E Frequently Asked Questions
The compiler allocates space for local variables and parameters at fixed static locations because a dynamic stack is too costly (much more code generated and slow program execution). Local varables and parameters may share the same static locations to achieve efficient and safe reuse of RAM space. However, local variables are not allocated if the function is not called. The valid call trees are from main() and the interrupt routine, either by a direct call or indirectly through another function.
