Pellets that are too long can bridge or block the feeding mechanism. Our pellets are screened to remove long pellets as well as short pellets and fines. The pellets we sell are generally between 3/8 and 3/4 inch in length. Pellets that are too hard may jam the feeding mechanism.

Wood is chipped, dried, and ground to a saw dust consistency. The pellet is formed by pressure and heat when forced through a pellet die. Only moisture is added. We do not add binders or glues.

Pellets that are too hard can be difficult to light and may not continue to burn. Pellets that are too soft may crumble and will not produce as much heat. The density of our pellets is closely monitored, and only pellets with the proper weight per cubic foot are sold. Pellets that are packaged with excessive moisture or were not properly cooled can sweat in the bag, this will cause the pellets to crumble and may even cause the pellets to mold.

It is really a question of personal choice. If you use the wood pellets, you must ensure that they are made only from soft wood. It is also significant to make sure that your manufacturer does not use adhesive to form the pellet. Also verify that the wood used does not come from recycling and that your manufacturer is specializing in products for the animals and not for fueling stoves.

Wood does shrink as it dries, but the shrinkage doesn't start until the lumber is below fiber saturation, about 28% moisture content. If the outside surface is below 28% while the center of the board is still above fiber saturation, the outside will try to shrink while the center doesn't- and if this continues, until the surface becomes too dry in relation to the core, the lumber will split or check.

Most likely not. Average pellet stoves with a standard burn pot are not designed to cope with high ash content. In general, corn stoves will have more potential to handle grass pellets because they are designed to deal with a somewhat messy residue. This is no guarantee that corn stoves will burn grass, corn stoves sometimes have difficulty dealing with corn.

Not yet. The major advantage of boilers over stoves is that they provide hot water and central hot water heating. Commercially available pellet boilers are designed to burn wood pellets and possibly corn pellets. They have no means of dealing with high ash content. They can successfully burn grass pellets, but will generate a large clinker that would need to be removed from the burn chamber every 6 hours or so, in order for the boiler to continue functioning.

Absolutely not. If both were available for the same price, wood pellets would be preferred as they will burn with less ash, making for easier cleanup of the stove. If the pellet stove industry continues to expand at its current rate, however, there will not be enough wood pellets to meet the market. This is the situation in parts of Europe and why wood pellets are currently being imported from North America to Europe (only economical due to subsidies).

We believe it makes sense to use American-made fuel products, especially given the daily increases in oil prices and our dependency on foreign countries for fuel. Pellets are extremely cost effective and are also better for the environment.

Nope, the fireplaces are gas and on a thermostat. They serve as the main heat source for the cabins in the winter so they are not operational in the summer. Our fireplaces are so efficient that the heat they produce just from keeping the pilot light on would be unpleasant in the summer time. (We do have A/C and back-up electric heat as well!) The grill is gas and propane is provided.
