Tree trimmings are picked up during the spring cleanup period (remember, bag box or bundle the trimmings) or debris may be disposed of at Ontario Sanitary Service or at the Payette County landfill. There is a charge for disposal at these facilities.

When you pay for your tree, a free tree bag will be given to you. Different towns have different methods of disposal so it's best to check with your local chamber office to see how they would like you to dispose of your tree. If you would like, you can return your tree to the tree farm and throw it into a large trailer and we will make it into mulch or sink it in our farm pond for fish habitat.

The Town of North Branford Leaf drop off center is located on Middletown Avenue at the North Haven town line. The center is open on Saturdays in April, May, October and November. Please check the recycling/trash card and Town’s website for drop off dates. The center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Bundled and tied branches less than 4’ in length and no thicker than 4” diameter are acceptable with your normal trash.

Sooty Mold - Appears as a black, sooty growth on the upper side of leaves. Is harmless, but indicates that an insect was or is present (usually aphids, whiteflies or scales). Whiteflies. As these piercing-sucking insects feed on the undersides of the leaves, they secrete a sticky, clear fluid that drops onto the leaves below. Sooty mold grows upon this secretion. Sooty Mold Water or Varietal Problem. The problem of splitting fruits usually occurs in the early fall.

Chewing insect - Usually either a grasshopper or caterpillar. Damage is usually contained to a small proportion of leaves and should be ignored. The caterpillar is called an Orange Dog, and is the larval stage of the beautiful Giant Swallowtail butterfly.

The black spots are a fungus disease called Tar Spot. It infects Norway maple (including all of the horticultural forms such as "Crimson King"), Silver maple and Freeman's maple. The disease infects leaves late in the season and has little impact on the overall health of the tree. The disease is already widespread and sanitation (leaf removal) is not effective in reducing the infestation level for the following year, so let the leaves decay under the trees to at least improve the soil health.

Yellowing can be a sign of several different problems. But, one of the most common is iron deficiency. Iron chlorosis is identifiable by the yellowing of the leaf while the veins remain green. To treat this problem the plant needs to be fed iron. Chelated iron is the most readily available source. We have both liquid and granular formulas available.
