R uses C-style string handling, '\' is treated as an escape character, so that for example one can enter a newline as '\n'. When you really need a '\', you have to escape it with another '\'. Thus, in filenames use something like "c:\\data\\money.dat". You can also replace '\' by '/' ("c:/data/money.dat"). MS Windows support is relatively recent, and still experimental; Freeciv was originally written for Unix and the X window system, and is, in fact, extremely portable across Unix versions. You might find that under MS Windows, jigdo-lite will download some files but then fail to read their contents, which will produce a "No such file or directory" error message. It seems that this occurs if the length of the filenames that jigdo processes exceeds a certain limit. There is some work being done to create a free port of XFree86 to Microsoft Windows. However, in the mean time, if you need to run X on such a platform you'll need to use one of the available commercial servers. One of the commercial products, X Appeal, is from an XFree86 sponsor and is a port of the XFree86 servers to MS-DOS. They also have a freely available demo version. Wine is not complete at this time, so some of each programs' features may not work. They will in time as more of the MS Windows API calls are included in Wine. Menus should be working correctly, if for some reason your applications menus stops responding. Most of them cannot. A system that runs exclusively MS Windows is, in general, more virus-resistant than a plain DOS system. The reason is that most resident viruses are not compatible with the memory management in Windows. Furthermore, most existing viruses will damage Windows applications if they try to infect them as normal (i.e. DOS) EXE files.
