What's the difference between a freestanding and a fireplace insert stove?

Frequently Asked Questions
Freestanding stoves can be connected to chimneys built especially for them. The chimneys may be of masonry construction or be a factory-built metal system that's been designed, tested and listed for use with wood burning appliances. Freestanding stoves can also connect to an existing fireplace chimney, if the height and position of the stove's flue collar permits it. When this type of installation is done, the stoves may be called hearth stoves.

Can I install a fireplace, stove or insert myself?

Fireplaces
Installation of our hearth products must be done in strict accordance with local or national building codes, and the unit's installation manual. We recommend that our products be installed by a factory-trained Mr. Fireplace installer.

Should I have any type of inspection done to my fireplace, stove or insert?

Fireplaces
Yes. We recommend annual service of your fireplace by a qualified serviceperson. This will ensure that your appliance is functioning properly. Your decision really comes down to how much a priority heating efficiency is for you. If you want a lot of heat from your fireplace, you should consider a direct vent gas insert. From a cost standpoint, an insert will cost approximately five times the cost of a nice gas log set.

Ozark Hardwood Products
Unfortunately, no. You will need a wood pellet stove but if you don’t already have one, the savings you will realize in heating your home will more than pay for the stove. Some companies do offer converters which may be placed in fireplace inserts. Please check with your local hardware store or on the web to see if this option will work for you.

What is the difference between attached and freestanding?

Carports, Aluminum Carport, Car Port
Attached means that the awning will use the house on one side and posts on the other side for support. The posts need to attach to concrete, either to a 4" nominal slab or concrete footings (engineering determines footing size). Freestanding means that the awning will not attach to the house and solely relies on posts at each side of the awning for support. Freestanding units require the posts be poured into concrete footings (engineering determines footing size) for the shear value.

I have an older Buck Stove and I would like to convert it to a freestanding stove. Is this possible?

Yes, it is possible. You will need a stack and a pedestal to do so. First, you must determine which model you have. To do so, measure the rectangular opening on the top of the unit. If the opening is 13 ¾” x 3 ¼,” you have either a Model 26000 Old Buck (Little) or a Model 27000 Old Buck (Regular). Order part # FA 260421 for the stack and part # FA P4171B for the pedestal. If the opening measures 16” x 3 ¾,” then you have Model 28000 Old Buck (Big).
