You can copy and paste any text from other applications into a Merge file comparison window. So, simply open a new two-way file comparison, then copy the text from one document (in Microsoft Word, press Ctrl+A to select the entire document, followed by Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard) and paste it into the left file pane (click in the pane, then press Ctrl+P to paste). Then, repeat, pasting the text of the second document revision that you wish to compare into the right file pane.

Though MiniVend has ODBC capability, the Microsoft Access ODBC driver is not a network driver. You cannot access it on a PC from your ISP or UNIX system. However, you can turn it around. Once you have created a MySQL or other SQL database on the UNIX machine, you may then obtain the Windows ODBC driver for the database (mySQL has a package called myODBC) and use the UNIX database as a data source for your PC-based database program. You install it by typing, as root, rpm -i mysql-3.XX.XX.rpm.

Use the 'Tools', 'Mail merge' option. Step two of the mail merge helper lets you open an existing data source. Under 'Files of type' you can specify a Microsoft Access database, or use Microsoft Query to access other types of database. In recent versions of Word you will also see a 'Select method' check box. Since Word is not intended as pure "graphics" program, we may have to re-construct portions of your document so we can output and print it successfully. Mail merge documents are documents created in MS Word, which use a standard text throughout, but get some data (i.e. personal details, addresses, recall appointments etc.) from another data source (file). Here is how it's done using Office 2000.

If your data source is a Word document, you can edit data records and add new records and data fields. For example, to add new clients to a mailing list, you add a record for each new client. To add a new category of information to all the records for example, a fax number or electronic-mail address, you add a new data field.

While you technically can use MS Word as your text editor I really suggest that you don't. Use Notepad instead. Word tries to write HTML for you and will make a mess of your document. I don't recommend it until you are more familiar with using HTML code and tags and can recognize what is supposed to be there and what MS Word has coded in for you. It is supposed to be a feature, but it is not a particularly helpful one.
