In either case, the images can be compared from exam to exam and from digital to analog.

Both digital and conventional mammography use x-ray radiation to produce an image of the breast; however, conventional mammography stores the image directly on film, whereas digital mammography takes an electronic image of the breast and stores it directly in a computer. This allows the recorded data to be enhanced, magnified, or manipulated for further evaluation.

Low-resolution digital images can be transmitted instantly via e-mail to anywhere in the world. Large prints can be produced from high-resolution digital images. Graphics and labeling can easily be added to digital images. Digital proof images can be viewed by the client the same day as the flight. Custom cropping, color correction and haze-reduction techniques can be applied to digital images in the "Digital Darkroom".

Analog mammography uses x-ray to record images on film using an x-ray cassette. Films are then "developed" and produced and put on a light box and read by the Radiologist. With Digital mammography the x-rays produce a digital image on a screen while the patient is still in position. The technologist has the ability to review these in "real time" to determine image quality.

Although the small size of the individual pixels in CCD, CMOS, and Live-MOS image sensors enables them to capture even more detail than film, the sensitivity of the sensor elements is highly directional. That is, they respond best to light that strikes the elements straight on. With lenses designed for use with film, the light rays passing through the periphery of the lens strike the image sensor at an angle, and this tends to degrade picture quality at the periphery of the image area.

Mammography (mammogram) is an x-ray exam of the breast. Most mammography is done as a baseline or screening exam. This exam is useful in diagnosis of breast disease and in detection of cancer. Most breast disease is not malignant or cancerous. If cancer is present, finding it early improves your chances of being treated successfully. If you, or your doctor have felt a breast lump, mammography may aid in detecting other lumps or a lump in the other breast which cannot be felt yet.

The advantage of digital printing is that it provides the ability to print high quality full color or photographic images with no minimum quantity required for an order. The only disadvantage is that, in order to achieve color accuracy, digital printing can currently only be used on white or light colored garments.
