It is illegal to tamper with an odometer to change its reading: usually to reduce the number of miles on the car. Unscrupulous dealers have been known to "rollback" an odometer to make a used car more attractive to a buyer. The speedo is mechanically driven off of the front left wheel; a cable is driven by the dust cap on the front left hub, passes through the spindle, and up to the speedometer. On later cars this cable is actually in two pieces, one to a box which is used to count miles, to trip a light which warns the driver to replace the O2 sensor. Contrary to the truth some people think that digital odometers cannot be rolled back. In digital odometers, the current mileage reading is stored in a chip or an EEPROM. It's easy to remove the EEPROM and then reprogram it, leaving no signs of tampering. Anyone can remove the chip and reprogram it with lower mileage. Perform a title check! The stock odometer can either remain on the bike, or can be removed. Removing the stock odometer will preserve it from potential damage (after all, they are expensive to replace), and they can always be put back on if you sell your bike. If you choose to remove the stock odometer and leave the odometer drive in place, the TrailTech kit has a plug/cap to protect the hole from dirt and debris.
