Most electronic resources are licensed by The Library from companies in business for profit. The terms of the contracts with these companies stipulate that The Library allow only UC faculty, students and staff to use these materials. Consequently, when you are off campus you will not be able to access many of the online journals and databases that you could access while on campus, unless you use the Library proxy server or Virtual Private Network (VPN).

The proxy server provides access to most licensed resources. However, some programs do not work with the proxy server. These require VPN for off-campus use: ARTstor (Macintosh only), Luna Insight, MDL Crossfire Beilstein and Gmelin, SciFinder Scholar, the java client in UC Image Service, and the Connect function in EndNote. Another difference is that the proxy server requires a one-time change in your web browser settings, then prompts you when you need to log in.

What should I do if the old Proxy server is still set up (or I have another proxy server set up by my ISP or company?)

Proxy servers fulfill the second main purpose of a VPN: to make your network connections appear as if they originate on the proxy server as opposed to your computer. For example, Northwestern University Library offers access to a wide range of electronic resources, including periodical indexes, electronic journals, electronic texts, and statistical and numeric databases.

Opera allows you to specify a different proxy server to be used for each protocol. Each one can be configured or disabled independently, and any URL you wish to access directly whilst a proxy is enabled can be added to an Exceptions list. Connections to Gopher and WAIS services can only be made via a proxy server.

The solution here is to chain the proxies together. SpamBayes (sb_server) doesn't really care where in the chain it is, although some of the other proxies (often anti-virus software like Norton Anti-Virus or AVG) sometimes do. The easiest solution is to leave your other proxy set up exactly as it was before SpamBayes. Then look in your email client to see what port it is using (it'll probably be connecting to "localhost" or "127.0.0.

If your ISP uses its own proxy server, you can still use SpoonProxy. What you need to do is map your ISP's proxy port (usually port 8080) IN and OUT to the IP address of your ISP's proxy and then use port 8080 as you normally would as the port for your HTTP connections in your browser. Be aware that you can't run both the HTTP proxy and a port mapping on port 8080.

Many people have problems connecting through a proxy server, but do not wish to go into "Firewall Mode" and sacrifice some of the capabilities of WinMX. So, to get around a proxy server without messing around with the server itself (documentation on setting up a proxy server is usually quite scarce), create a new notepad document in your WinMX root directory (e.g.; C:/PROGRAM FILES/WINMX) and write this code in it:

Go to 'Tools' ?????? 'Preferences' ?????? 'Advanced' ?????? Connection, and enable "Keepalive (NAT)." This fix works for shared internet connections by sending a dummy packet to the server every 2 minutes to keep the connection alive.

By connecting to the VPN service, you assure that the data you transmit will be secure between your host and the UF core network. Once it arrives on campus, it is decrypted and sent in the clear. Furthermore, it allows you to gain access to resources that are restricted based on source address. While you are connected to the VPN concentrator, you appear to other hosts at UF as if you were on the UF network.

Go to the Tools menu, click on Options... then Proxy. Check both HTTP and FTP Default to direct connection, or add your own Proxy server address (ask your network administrator for it) by clicking on Add That's all you have to do. Now you can use FlashGet to download files.

For a particular download job, go to the Advanced Settings for the download job and reduce the number of splits to 1. For a global change, go to the Job Queue View and reduce number of connections that DownloadStudio uses to 1.

A web proxy can only be used for the first type of connection, since the second type is not HTTP. Theoretically, you could use the HTTP CONNECT command to tunnel them through an HTTP proxy, but this would require additional code support in the client. There is a possible workaround for this scenario, however; see the final point below. If the proxy does not require authorization, the system-wide proxy configuration should work.

Students must be registered for the current term/semester (including summer) in order to qualify. Select the 'Proxy Server Settings' menu item from the main 'Options' menu. In the dialog, click to enable the proxy server and type in the http and ssl proxy addresses and ports. Addresses can either be domain names or IP addresses. If authenticating against the proxy, click on the 'Authorization' button and enter your user name / password information in the form.
