Use a sound card or mainboard with proven Windows XP sound and MIDI drivers which are fully 48kHz sample rate compatible. The Creative Sound Blaster PCI 16 card is acceptable.

Most notebook computers have built-in sound but don't provide a connector for MIDI IN and OUT. If you are connecting directly to one PC, under windows 98SE, 2000 or XP, either Parallel or USB is usually fine. However, the way XP handles USB devices may cause you to lose the device occasionally. This is because XP assigns virtual USB ports to multiple devices on the same USB bus. If the plotter is switched off or disconnected when the PC is booted up, it may be found later as a new device on a different virtual port, and the driver may need to be installed again. Even though the registered MIME type for MIDI files is audio/midi, some browsers are not set up to recognize it as such; instead, they look for audio/x-midi. The word says it: "multi-client", where you should read "client" as "MIDI application". So, a multiclient driver allows more than one ("multi") application ("client") to use the same MIDI ports of your interface. So, you could use your favorite sequencer and bZone at the same time. The V.24 serial interface is quite simply best suited for this application. Its connection cable can be extended to almost any length and does not produce long-wave interference. If you make a description of a 'phrase' in CPS with tables, then you can also send phrases of MIDI to CPS. Not without significant modification. The USB protocol is somewhat non-trivial to implement and the 16F84A PIC used in the receiver circuit has neither the speed or memory requirements. It is possible to buy chips specifically dedicated to USB development, I've found the 18F4550 particularly easy to develop for, but very expensive (about AU$40 each).
