Answer: No. A student's dependency status for financial aid purposes is determined by how you respond to questions in Step 3 of the FAFSA Form. It does not matter if you live with your parents, or if you claimed yourself on your tax return, or if you pay your own bills.

Under some extreme circumstances (unknown whereabouts of both parents, abusive situation, etc.) you may apply for dependency override. Documentation of your situation will be required.

The government does not grant independent status simply because a student is living away from home. To qualify as independent, you must be out of high school four or more years, be married or common-law, have dependent children, or have worked full-time for two twelve-month periods.

They will be assessed without their family's input and will usually come out as from lowest income brackets (unless they have lots of savings and a huge income from somewhere!). These students tend to receive the maximum financial support available and are certainly one of our target groups for additional support once they are a registered student.
