Coolers - Can I install a larger transmission cooler?

Frequently Asked Questions: Service: Allison Transmission
GM designs adequate cooling into it's vehicles based on GVW and GCW ratings and factory engine HP ratings, and comply with Allison's own standards for cooling capacity. If additional transmission coolers are added, great care needs to be taken to insure proper installation. A primary concern is excessive flow restriction or 'pressure drop' across the entire cooler circuit, such as from the use of added lines or connections that are too small.

Why do I need a transmission oil cooler for my car?

FAQ
Due to high ambient temperatures and the tremendous heat generated in an automatic transmission, an auxiliary transmission oil cooler is an economical way to help protect against costly repairs. Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) cools, lubricates and cleans internal transmission components. When transmission temperatures exceed about 93°C, the ability of the ATF to perform is greatly diminished. Subsequently, the life span of the fluid, seals and moving parts are significantly reduced.

Why has oil coated the underside of my engine and transmission?

_2
It's most likely that the seal around your intake manifold is leaking. While it was originally thought to be the intake manifold gasket itself leaking, it's now found to be the sealant being used. The reason is a gasket is only applied to the left and right sides of the manifold while the front and back is sealed with RTV sealant. If the sealant is applied to a surface, which isn't clean, the oil will be able seep through.
